Dead in the Water (2007)
Posted on 09.26.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 4:08 pm

Where, I ask you, would cheap horror cinema be without secluded family cabins?

Hot sisters, Tiffany and Jen lug along their boyfriends for a weekend retreat at their parent s cabin in the woods. However, upon arriving the foursome find the cabin empty, the parents MIA, no cell reception and of course their car just died! As darkness falls the twenty-somethings must fight for their lives as Zombies attack the cabin and death comes for them with a vengeance! And what do you do when you’re surrounded by Zombies in the middle of nowhere?… Use the local lake as your escape, but what if evil lies beneath the water — you die.

Aquatic zombies! At last, something to complete a three-disc boxed set with Shock Waves and Zombie Lake!

Corpses (2005)
Posted on 09.24.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 8:43 pm

I’d like to welcome direct-to-video favorite Jeff Fahey to the realm of zombie movies.

Fred, the small town mortician discovers a serum which revives corpses for a few hours. He grasps the opportunity and uses them to do some dirty work for him, like robbery, destruction and murder. Encouraged by the success, He is planning to revive an entire army of corpses.

Fahey is the cop (naturally) trying to stop the mortician. Co-starring (and showing Fahey the ropes) is scream queen Tiffany Shepis (of Dorm of the Dead, by the way. Writer/director Rolfe Kanefsky has a lengthy string of genre credits (though I don’t know that his experience helming, say, The Erotic Misadventures of the Invisible Man (2003) is much help here).

Warning: The trailer gives away the final scene. Niiiiice.

No extras, but for $7.99 at Amazon.com, you really didn’t expect any, did you?

Dorm of the Dead (2006) encore
Posted on 09.19.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 2:04 pm

So waaaay back when, I told you about Dorm of the Dead being available on DVD. And now it is again! Or still! Or alternatively! Whatever. Phoenix Entertainment Group, via its “Under the Bed Films” label. Same extras — trailer and a behind-the-scenes thingie — but now, cheaper and easier to find!

I’d embed the YouTube trailer here, but it’s a wee bit NSFW (you know what those kids do in those dorms), so I’ll just send you there instead.

$13.49 at Amazon.com.

Walk of the Dead (1973)
Posted on 09.17.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 2:22 pm

You may know it as Vengeance of the Zombies or Revolt of the Dead Ones or The Rebellion of the Dead Women; you may even know it under its original title, La Rebelión de las Muertas. Whatever you call it, the Spanish horror film written by and starring Paul Naschy and directed by Leon Klaminsky has a new DVD release from Televista/Music Video Distributors.

In foggy London, an Indian mystic uses magical chants to raise women from the dead. This madman then sends the female zombies out to perform revenge killings for him.

Zombie Aftermath (1982)
Posted on 09.14.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 2:22 pm

Let’s be honest: This isn’t really a zombie movie. But post-apocalyptic mutants don’t market themselves well these days, so a little change of label is in order since you first saw this one video twenty-five years ago, titled simple Aftermath.

Two astronauts return from a long journey in space. They discover that, in their absence, the earth has been plunged into a nuclear holocaust. Insane minor despots reign supreme, with high tech weaponry at their command. The two astronauts are forced to fight for their lives — and later, to assist in the resistance movement.

if the name of writer/producer/director/star Steve Barkett means nothing to you, here’s a credit that might clue you in: “Co-produced by Ted V. Mikels.”

No extras, $9.99 at Amazon.com.

Return of the Living Dead (1985) Collector’s Edition
Posted on 09.12.07 by Nathan Shumate @ 9:20 am

If this horror/black comedy classic isn’t already in your collection, MGM has released a Collector’s Edition to fill that gap. I shouldn’t have to describe the movie itself in any more detail than this one word:

“BRAINS!!!!”

Here’s what the new widescreen disc includes:

- Cast, crew and undead commentary
- “Remembering The Dead: Cast Recollections” featurette
- “From The Underground: The Rise of Horror in the 80s” featurette
- Zombie subtitle stream

That last bears some explanation. Basically, any time the zombies are on screen and not saying anything, little “pop-up” captions appear on the bottom of the screen, telling you what’s on their minds. Yes, they do think about things other than (or in addition to) brains.

$14.99 at Amazon.com.
