That’s what I like about zombie movies: The nihilism. Even if we overcome the immediate threat of the living dead, we’re still screwed.
War breaks out worldwide. In desperation world leaders engage Biological weapons, which quickly mutate and cause the dead to rise. The epidemic spreads faster that any one could imagine. The only safe place for the few remaining humans to survive is a nuclear fallout shelter, but getting there is the problem. A Special Forces agent is assigned to escort America’s leaders to the location, but the plane crashes a few miles short of their destination. Caught in a tropical setting, those that survive are pitted against hordes of flesh eating zombies. A battle ensues, but when the end is near will humanity prevail, or will mankind fall to the rising dead?
Written, directed, and acted by complete unknowns, but the trailer at York Entertainment looks surprisingly good. You can pick up the DVD for $22.49 at Amazon.com.

So. What do you do when your living dead film fails to make friends and influence people? Give it a derivative new title, of course! Z-grade auteur David Heavener has spent twenty years trying to make himself a star; I think you can judge his success for yourself by your recognition of his name, or lack thereof. One of his rare horror outings was Curse of the Maya, later retitled to Evil Grave: Curse of the Maya for British release. It finally has arrived for domestic DVD release under a title so shamelessly derivative, even Italian gore directors are shocked by its chutzpah.
When a young couple inherits ownership to an abandoned California property, they decide to make it the home of their dreams. Little do they know, but fate has delivered them a nightmare, in the form of an army of undead zombies. Their dream house sets atop an ancient burial ground, cursed by an evil Mayan ritual killing. Now, with fresh meat nearby, the undead emerge to feast on the living and deliver their zombie carnage. The fate of the world is in the hands of our two, terrified homeowners, who must find a way to stop the undead before it s too late!
In addition to starring writer/director/producer Heavener himself, the film also boasts Joe Estevez and Todd “Diff’rent Strokes” Willis. CAN YOU FEEL THE STAR POWER???
Those few people who have managed to see it say that at least the zombies look good. The trailer, under its Curse of the Maya title, is here. No extras to speak of (sorry, a trailer really isn’t THAT cool). $14.95 at Amazon.com.

Here’s one that combines a few genres: Zombie movies, heist movies, and “urban” movies. (You can tell the latter because it’s released by UrbanWorks Entertainment, and it stars people with names like “I-40,” “Big Daddy Kane,” and “Bone Crusher.”)
When a street thug named Ski (Brandon Hardin) and his three friends approach underground entrepreneur Hustle (E-40) to get backing for a bank robbery, the crime boss agrees on one condition, that they take along a more experienced hand Jackson (D. J. Naylor) to keep an eye on the job. Upon arrival in the small town of Maysville, the would-be outlaws are warned about the night’s deadly secret: At the full moon, a host of murderous parasitic zombies overrun the town. Brushing this off as local superstition, Ski and his boys decide to double-cross Jackson and move earlier than expected. The heist goes bad and leaves the robbers trapped inside the bank, first by the local police and then, to their growing horror, by an army of the undead. One of the few other survivors in Maysville, a mysterious man called The Hunter (Big Daddy Kane), joins them to take a stand against the gruesome horde. What the crew doesn’t know is that The Hunter plans to use them as bait to draw the inhuman attackers into a terrifying final confrontation.
The director, Bo Webb, calls it “without a doubt the finest hip-hop/bank heist/zombie-attack movie ever made in Wilmington [North Carolina].” I can’t challenge that.
The DVD includes deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes, and a gag reel. (Is that three special features, or just one?) $17.99 at Amazon.com.

I suppose we’re far enough past Hurricane Katrina to enjoy things like this. Aren’t we?
When the Florida Panhandle is hit by a “Category 5” hurricane, the President of the United States has no choice but to reactivate the Florida Militia to restore order in the region. In their quest to restore stability to an unstable area, the Militia is ordered to ‘shoot looters’. When one of the looters tracked down and shot is the grandson of a Voodoo Queen, all hell breaks loose as he seeks revenge on the Militia.
From Brain Damage Films, so you know it’s… well, cheap. Other than that, it’s a crapshoot. (DVD’s barebones, too.) The Brain Damage site has a trailer, but it’s broken right now. Amazon.com has the DVD for $13.49.

Lulu.com is a print-on-demand publisher, like Cafepress but only for books: Upload your manuscript and promote it, and they’ll print one off and send it when someone orders it. As you can imagine, for this kind of self-publishing (especially with no upfront investment), quality ranges anywhere from “not too bad” to “dear sweet heavens, who let you near a keyboard?”
There are 1227 horror novels on Lulu. And in six months, Gregory Solis’ zombie novel Rise and Walk has become the #1 seller among them. So even grading on the curve for self-published books, it ranks pretty high.
‘Course, you don’t have to take my word for it. (Or his.) Solis’ website, Hadrian Publishing, has multiple sample chapters available to test it out before you buy. Plus forums and other goodies.
You can buy the book for $16.99 through either Lulu or Amazon.com.
