Shot for under $2000 (!) in Super-8mm (!) by writer/producer/director/star (!) John R. Hand. Sounds like a cross between Bride of Re-Animator, twenty Jess Franco films, and half of Bela Lugosi’s filmography. The DVD’s at Amazon.com for $17.99. (And no, I didn’t forget the apostrophe. That’s the title. Deal.) Filed under: DVD Comments: None |

Stars such notables as Jasmin St. Claire (don’t google her from your work computer!) and Pamela Sutch. The trailer’s available at Brain Damage’s website; the DVD, with commentary and interviews and bloopers and deleted scenes, is at Amazon.com for $12.99. Filed under: DVD Comments: None |

Who knew that zombie horror and nurseploitation would go so well together? But apparently they do: This little Canadian-made indie won for “Best Cinematography” at Slamdance, “Best Genre Crossover Film” at the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival*, and “Best of the Fest” at the Boston Underground Film Festival. The DVD from BFS Entertainment includes a commentary track, interviews, and the obligatory trailer. $21.99 at Amazon.com. *Rhode Island has an “International Horror Film Festival”? And no, I can’t see any difference between the two editions, aside from the covers. Both come in at 88 minutes, R-rated, widescreen. Both are $21.99 at Amazon.com; the closeup cover is here, and the “posse” cover is here. Filed under: DVD Comments: None |

Ha — the title’s a ‘Mad Cow Disease’ reference! I get it! 83 minutes in widescreen, a featurette and a single deleted scene. $13.99 at Amazon.com. Filed under: DVD Comments: None |

Sometimes you can’t see the zombie movies in front of you. That’s because they’re disguised. Pick just about any movie with the word “Frankenstein” in the title, though, and it could be a zombie movie with sutures.
Just out this month from Brain Damage Films:
Recombinant genre alert! Just out on DVD:
Produced independently under the title Last Rites, this urban horror-thriller looks like it should be another utterly forgettable “living dead in da hood” flick (”
Surprisingly, though, it’s getting plenty of good reviews around the InterWebs, from “hidden gem” to “massively entertaining.” (On the other hand, there’s the guy on Amazon who says, “I want my 90 minutes back!”) At the very least, you’ve got Reggie Bannister co-starring. That’s always a plus.
Hey, remember when Billy Zane was poised to have a major motion picture career, with The Phantom (1996) and Titanic (1997) and stuff? And now, a decade later, he’s headlining indie-produced direct-to-video zombie horror-comedies.
