The Undead and Philosophy: Chicken Soup for the Soulless, edited by Richard Greene and K. Silem Mohammad
Posted on 11.21.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 3:19 pm

From the same “Popular Culture and Philosophy” series that brought us Monty Python and Philosophy: Nudge Nudge, Think Think! and James Bond and Philosophy (are we sensing a trend yet?), 288 pages on, well, zombies and philosophy:

Though Bram Stoker coined the term, the undead have stalked the human imagination for eons, appearing in the myths and legends of nearly all cultures. The concept of people, or unpeople, interacting with others while devoid of humanity provides a wealth of material for philosophical speculation. Encompassing George Romero’s radiation-spawned Living Dead, the “infected” of 28 Days Later, as well as more traditional zombies and vampires, the essays in The Undead and Philosophy ponder questions such as: Is it cool to be undead, or does it totally suck? Is a zombie simply someone with a brain but without a mind? Are some of the people around us undead, and how could we tell? Can the undead be held responsible for what they do? Is it always morally OK to kill the undead? Served up in a witty, entertaining style, these and other provocative questions present philosophical arguments in terms accessible to all readers.

One Dark Night (1982)
Posted on 11.13.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 12:18 pm

Look, it’s not my fault things are slow around here. Post-Halloween, most distributors aren’t releasing a whole bunch of zombie media. Apparently, there are SOME people in the world who don’t look forward to Christmas as a time for giving and receiving the flesheating dead. Imagine that!

In the meantime, I’ll point out to you a few offerings that may have passed you by, like this one: Media Blasters’ two-disc special edition (!!) of 1982’s One Dark Night, released in early 2006.

World famous psychic Raymar is found dead - along with several victims of his bizarre experiments. One the same day his body is interred in a mausoleum, high-schooler Julie Wells (Meg Tilly) agrees to spend the night there all alone - as part of a hazing to join the clique, The Sisters (Robin Evans, Elizabeth Daily, Leslie Speights). Later that night, the sisters secretly return to torment Julie in an attempt to scare her out of her mind. But the girls are not alone. Raymar’s experiments continue even after death - on his own body and on the dozen resident corpses in various stages of decay. Soon they’re exhumed and looking for fresh bodies.

One Dark Knight haunts audiences’ psyches with its claustrophobic setting, moody cinematography, foreboding score and ultra-realistic makeup effects.

Adam West also co-stars. When you speak of “various stages of decay,” his career immediately springs to mind, doesn’t it? (Thank you! Tip your waitress!)

The two discs feature the theatrical cut (w/ commentary by director Tom McLoughlin and co-writer Michael Hawes), an alternate director’s cut, and a behind-the-scenes featurette. $14.99 at Amazon.com.

Mansion of the Living Dead (1985)
Posted on 11.03.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 10:25 am

Caught in the post-Halloween doldrums? I don’t know if this will help or just hurt more, but Jess Franco’s Mansion of the Living Dead (1985) is out on DVD.

Get ready to experience notorious writer/director Jess Franco at his most wild, perverse and extreme! Four wanton waitresses - including Eva Leon of HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN, Mamie Kaplan of LILLIAN, THE PERVERTED VIRGIN and the legendary Lina Romay (billed here as `Candy Coster’) of BARBED WIRE DOLLS - arrive for vacation in the Canary Islands where they soon indulge their hungers for masturbation, lesbian lust, bondage and beyond. But the ultimate depravities are still to come, as a nearby 17th Century monastery unleashes a horde of zombie Templars crazed for the taste of hot female flesh!

Robert Foster (MACUMBA SEXUAL) co-stars in this jaw-dropping saga of sex and sadism that Franco scholars have called an insane homage to the BLIND DEAD series. Severin Films is proud to present it now fully restored from original Spanish elements, featuring all-new Bonus Materials and presented totally uncut & uncensored for the first time ever in America!

Aw, you had me at “zombie Templars.” (I know, I’m easy.)

It’s a Spanish-language disc with English subtitles, plus interviews with Franco and star Lina Romay. $22.49 from Amazon.com.
