The Blind Dead Collection
Posted on 09.27.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 4:15 pm

There are some things you can never have to many of, and Blind Dead movie editions is one. (Are one? Are many? I AM GUD ENLISCH!!) Blue Underground has just this week released Amando de Ossorio’s classic four-movie series about blinded Satanist Templars returning from the dead to grope for victims, this time packaged as standalone DVDs:

- Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971) (La Noche del Terror Ciego), aka Night of the Blind Dead and Crypt of the Blind Dead and a few other things;

- Return of the Evil Dead (1973) (El Ataque de los Muertos Sin Ojos) aka Attack of the Blind Dead and Return of the Blind Dead;

- The Ghost Galleon (1974) (El Buque Maldito), aka Ghost Ships of the Blind Dead, Horror of the Zombies, and Ship of Zombies;

- Night of the Seagulls (1975) (La Noche de las Gaviotas), aka Night of the Blood Cult and Night of the Death Cult.

The beauty of buying them separately is that, if you’re one of those people who thinks that the first one was clearly the best and that the quality went steadily downhill until the fourth one sucked ass, well, ain’t nobody forcing you to pay for the full set.

Each one contains both the English and Spanish language tracks (with English subtitles), plus posters and stills and whatnot. Each one will set you back $17.99 at Amazon.com (which still comes out cheaper than the $89.99 that the boxed set will ding you for).

They’re Templariffic!

The Zombie Pack 2
Posted on 09.25.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 3:03 pm

Here’s one way to get your zombie on in a hurry: Shriek Show’s The Zombie Pack 2 throws three living dead movies at you in one package.

·Burial Ground (1980), alternately known as Zombie 3 and Nights of Terror (and reviewed here);
·Flesheater (1988), aka Revenge of the Living Dead, starring Bill “Cemetery Zombie” Hinzman; and
·Zombie Holocaust (1979), previously known stateside as Doctor Butcher, M.D. (reviewed here).

Not a one of them is anything close to “good cinema,” but they can all be insanely good fun when seen in the right frame of mind.

$17.99 from Amazon.com, to be released tomorrow.

Frankenstein: The True Story (1973)
Posted on 09.22.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 9:50 am

And as long as we’re talking about ol’ Frankie…

Even Amazon.com’s in-house reviewer describes this 1973 TV-movie as “a big pile of camp lunacy,” also saying that

it’s safe to say that Shelley’s opus did not include crawling disembodied arms, sinister Chinese coolies, solar power, or the flabbergasting paisley dressing gown that Dr. Frankenstein wears for one brief but startling scene. In fact, The True Story deviates from Shelley’s story in almost every detail.

Of course, practically the same thing could be said about the classic Universal version, too. (I mean the deviation from Shelley’s novel. Not the paisley part.)

Stars Leonard Whiting, David “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” McCallum, and a a very fresh-faced Jane Seymour as this version’s “bride” of the monster. (Although, come on, 1973. Would she have been his bride? I don’t think so. Just living together is my guess.)

183 minutes of made-for-TV goodness for only $13.99 from Amazon.com, to be released September 26.

Frankenstein (1931) — 75th Anniversary Edition
Posted on 09.20.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 3:08 pm

Okay, so it may not be what you normally think of when you think “zombies” — but you know what? I don’t care. James Whale’s classic Frankenstein (1931), the film which has all-but-eclipsed the original novel in terms of pop-culture influence, is getting a special 7th-anniversary edition. Double discs, two commentary tracks, and a plethora of documentaries and short subjects on Karloff and his most iconic role.

To be released September 26th; order now for $18.89 at Amazon.com.

A Vault Of Horror by Keith Topping
Posted on 09.18.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 12:45 pm

Sometimes, reading about movies is better than watching them. (That’s the philosophy on which the entire Cold Fusion Media Empire is based.) So settle back with 427 pages of genre movie goodness/badness , in a book subtitled, “A Book of 80 Great* British Horror Movies from 1956-1974 (* and Not so Great)“:

From Night of the Demon to House of Whipcord… 80 British horror films which collectively made a lasting impression on the psyche of a nation. Author Keith Topping chronicles the films which shaped his childhood, taking a wry and often irreverent look at their triumphs and failings, their cast and crew, their continuity blunders and their impact on the genre as a whole. Illustrated with many rare photographs, this is one film guide guaranteed to raise a smile as we take you back to the terrors of yesteryear. Includes entries on the following films: Night of the Demon, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Trollenberg Terror, Dracula, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Mummy, The City of the Dead, Peeping Tom, Village of the Damned, The Curse of the Werewolf, Night of the Eagle, The Kiss of the Vampire, The Haunting, The Masque of the Red Death, The Black Torment, Dr Terror’s House of Horrors, Rasputin - The Mad Monk, Dracula Prince of Darkness, The Plague of the Zombies, The Witches, Invasion, Frankenstein Created Woman, The Sorcerers, Night of the Big Heat, Quatermass and the Pit, The Blood Beast Terror, The Devil Rides Out, Matthew Hopkins Witchfinder General, Curse of the Crimson Altar, Twisted Nerve, The Haunted House of Horror, Dracula Has Risen From Grave, The Oblong Box, The Corpse, Fragment of Fear, Incense For The Damned, I Start Counting, Scream and Scream Again, Taste the Blood of Dracula, The Vampire Lovers, Virgin Witch, The Blood on Satan’s Claw, The Beast in the Cellar, The Horror of Frankenstein, The House That Dripped Blood, Lust for a Vampire, And Soon the Darkness, Assault, Hands of the Ripper, Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde, Twins of Evil, Doomwatch, Crucible of Terror, Vampire Circus, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, Demons of the Mind, Revenge, Tower of Evil, Dracula AD 1972, Frenzy, Dr Phibes Rises Again, The Creeping Flesh, Psychomania, Nothing But The Night, Tales That Witness Madness, Death Line, Theatre of Blood.
