Cemetery of Terror (1985)/Grave Robbers (1990)
Posted on 08.31.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 10:13 am

Bah! Kids these days, they think they invented zombies! Why, they don’t know what us old-timers had to do to see a zombie flick. Up hill in the snow both ways, barefoot, just to see something made in Mexico! Also known, unsurprisingly, as Cementerio del Terror. The IMDb plot description:

A professor suspects that a vicious killer may have discovered a way to return from the grave and continue his violent spree. His fears are proved true when a group of teenagers decide to pull a Halloween prank by stealing the killer’s body from the morgue. When the teens recite an incantation from an old magic book over the corpse, it begins to come back to life, along with all of the bodies from the nearby cemetery.

The second feature on the double-feature DVD is Grave Robbers (1990), aka Ladrones de Tumbas, which is at least passingly similar in plot to the first movie: Teens, grave, killer zombie. Only one, but he makes up for it with enough of a body count that some people describe Grave Robbers as a zombie/slasher hybrid.

From Brentwood Home Video, so no extras mentioned and none expected. $12.99 from Amazon.com. (Ignore the production dates and plot descriptions from Amazon; they obviously think they have better things to do than ensure accuracy in their zombie movie sales copy.)

Bone Sickness (2004)
Posted on 08.30.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 8:40 am

Treatment for a leukemia-like illness as the springboard for a zombie epidemic? Sure, I’ll buy that. Just released, from the distributor that brought you City of Rott:

Kristen is caring for her terminally ill husband who is suffering from a degenerative bone disease. With no cure available she turns to a friend to help find an alternative form of medicine that has unimaginable side effect. As her husband slowly begins to rot and become hungry for human flesh, the dead begin to come back to life to unleash a non-stop slaughterfest not seen since Peter Jackson’s Braindead. Director Brian Paulin went back to the studio to shoot an extra 10 gore scenes exclusively for this Unearthed Films DVD Edition of Bone Sickness to make the Sickness even sicker!

No word on DVD extras; $22.99 at Amazon.com.

Recess Pieces
Posted on 08.29.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 9:02 am

I think we definitely need more zombie media aimed specifically at young readers, don’t you? Enter Bob Fingerman’s Recess Pieces, a graphic novel from Dark Horse:

Bad things are brewing in the halls of The Ben Turpin School for K-8. When a science project goes wrong, only the prepubescent children are spared the fate of zombification - which is not to say that they’re immune from being eaten alive! George Romero covered night, dawn, and day, but how about recess? With Recess Pieces, Bob Fingerman (Beg the Question, You Deserved It) dishes up a grisly combination of Hal Roach’s Our Gang and zombies, zombies and more zombies.

Where was this stuff when I was a kid?

96 pages, hardcover, full cover. Buy it for $10.17 from Amazon.com. You can also check out a four-page preview at the Dark Horse website.

What do you get for the horror fan who has everything? How about some unused Japanese horror movie posters?

Ebay seller movieposter-japan! has pristine examples of the two Evil Dead posters shown here, plus Lifeforce, Carpenter’s The Fog, several different designs for the original Dawn of the Dead and the remake, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, House of the Dead, and Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, plus plenty of other horror and genre titles.

Prices usually start at $18, $28, or $38 plus shipping from Japan. This is some seriously good wallpaper, folks. Check it out.

Mortuary (2005)
Posted on 08.25.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 8:52 am

mortuary.jpgThis one originally caught my eye when it was the single solitary zombie movie available in the Redbox at my local McDonald’s.

The Doyle family moves to rural California to start a new life; perhaps a strange choice because their new life takes on the form of running the long abandoned Fowler Brothers Funeral Home. The locals fear the place, and there are whispers around town that the land the home lies on is haunted. The Doyle family will soon discover that something lurks beneath the soil-something that raises rotten corpses from their long forgotten graves and feeds on death itself.

Directed by Tobe Hooper, which guarantees absolutely nothing but at least leaves open the possibility of entertainment. Stars Dan Byrd, Denise Crosby, Stephanie Patton, Alexandra Adi, and Rocky Marquette. Includes a director’s commentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette.

If you can’t find it in YOUR Redbox, you can pick it up for $23.99 at Amazon.com.

Grr…

Hey, guess what? All of the Amazon.com links have been fixed so they won’t take you to a 404 page. Prety nifty, huh?
