Hard Rock Zombies (1984)
Posted on 07.31.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 10:31 am

hardrockzombies.jpgBecause absolutely no one demanded it, the zombie “classic” Hard Rock Zombies is available on DVD. Here’s how Vintage Home Entertainment describes it:

Their farewell concert is to die for!

Jesse and his band are just a nice little heavy metal band playing clubs until they break into the big time. When Cassie meets them backstage to warn them away from playing in Grand Guignol because the parents don’t want that kind of influence on their children, they take it in stride as all part of the game.

After rehearsing for the gig, though, they are all brutally killed by a sadistic family of freaks, led by none other than Adolph Hitler. When Hitler comes out of hiding and his minions start sacrificing local townspeople to satisfy their lustful desires, the band rises from the dead at the request of Cassie to stop the murders, and put the living dead to rest by rocking one final time.

You wouldn’t think a movie with a description like that could be anything less than spectacular, would you? Yeah, well…

hardrockposter.jpgGet it for $12.99 at Amazon.com. And if you’re in the mood, check out the review I wrote waaaaay back in 2000.

Extra fun:

Amazon.com also sells a poster featuring the original VHS box art! Given that the art was far and away superior to the movie, it’s not a bad idea. $35.60.

Aftermath of the Dead by Gregory Smith
Posted on 07.31.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 8:23 am

aftermathofdead.jpgYou may not have considered that the POD “revolution” (that’s “Publish On Demand,” by the way — the ability to self-publish books in single copies as ordered) would result in a wave of self-published zombie epics. I didn’t. But it has, and in hindsight it seems inevitable.

And the quality level seems also inevitable. No offense to, um, the two or three skilled writers who are unaccountably using POD outfits instead of going with big-time publishers, but most self-published stuff is barely literate crap. That’s why it has to be self-published; no third-party would foot the publishing bill.

Which brings us to Gregory Smith’s Aftermath of the Dead. Here’s the publisher’s description:

It seemed like any other accident, which happens thousands of times across the cities and towns, which make up America. But, this one on Highway 44 in St. Louis, Missouri was much different. So, different in fact, it changed the world.

St. Louis, population 3 million, the gateway to the west. But, within, its city limits is the home of drug companies seduced by vast profits. A population and a world unprepared for what happens next.

Unleashed without warning; an unknown chemical which when exposed causes the dead to rise and destroy the living. The results; a horrifying quick outbreak, which spares no one it encounters. Populations devastated, as the creatures destroy all semblance of society.

Left over, the aftermath is a realm that is molded after the new ruling species. Aftermath of the Dead concerns the plight of what happens to the residents of St. Louis. The story of how the residents are forced to deal with and somehow survive this new reality. Deep inside themselves, people have the same sense, that there is no way in which to overcome the creatures!

And here are some selected comments from Amazon customer reviews:

It was a real chore to finish this book. I can forgive that the plot is of the usual run-of-the-mill type, but it is stylistically extremely poorly written.

** ** **

I will use excerpts from this book to teach my junior high students how not to write.

** ** **

I’d really like to find something positive about this book, but I can’t.

** ** **

It is a grammatical Armageddon…

** ** **

…The writing is so bad it’s sad. You would think that as a writer you would want to proof read your work, or maybe do a spell check…

If you’d like to get in on the fun (come on, indulge that masochistic tendency!), you can get it through iUniverse directly or via Amazon.com: $13.95 for the softcover version, or $6.00 for the PDF download.

Subject Two (2006)
Posted on 07.30.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 7:11 am

subjecttwo.jpgThis sounds like it could be an interesting take on the subject of reanimation. Or not. From the back of the DVD case, with a wee bit of commentary from yours truly:

High atop the Rocky’s [stet] in his remote mountain cabin, Dr. Franklin Vick [ha!] is engaged in controversial medical research… resurrection. Together with his psychologically unstable assistant Adam, Dr. Vick begins to test their work with gruesome effect on an experimental subject. Horrifying and violent side effects bring about disturbing results in their haunting and desolate snowbound location. [Three nouns, six adjectives.] Now, the world must face the consequences of meddling with death as it’s unleashed for humanity…

(What, exactly, was unleashed? Death? I kinda thought it was already a constant of the human condition, but…)

The DVD features deleted scenes, a behind the scenes featurette, commentary, and production notes. $21.99 at Amazon.com.

Masters of Horror: Homecoming (2005)
Posted on 07.28.06 by Nathan Shumate @ 8:26 am

homecoming.jpgDirector Joe Dante’s episode of the Showtime original series “Masters of Horror” just hit DVD, and it’s both a political statement and a good ol’-fashioned zombiefest.

It’s a few weeks before the Presidential election and an unpopular war still rages overseas. But when the Republican administration wishes that our dead troops could return to tell America how proud they were to serve their country, veterans begin to rise from their flag-draped coffins for the most horrific reason of all: to vote.

Are they gloriously resurrected heroes or braindead zombie dissidents? And even if the administration can devise the proper spin in time to steal their re-election, will an army of men and women killed for a lie finally show our nation the true face of hell? Jon Tenney (THE CLOSER), Thea Gill (QUEER AS FOLK) and Robert Picardo (STAR TREK:VOYAGER) star in this provocative stunner from director Joe Dante (GREMLINS,THE HOWLING, PIRANHA) that The Village Voice calls “jaw-dropping…easily one of the most important political films of the era!”

The Anchor Bay DVD also includes a commentary by Writer Sam Hamm, two interviews with Dante, two behind-the-scenes featurettes, three cast interviews, the screenplay, the original short story on which it was based… and (the cherry on top) a screensaver.
